Take your steak to the next level with this easy steak seasoning recipe! This delicious blend of herbs and spices is the easiest way to get steakhouse-level flavor at home. No matter what type of steak you’re cooking, this homemade steak seasoning will make it taste even better!

Steak is inherently delicious, but it’s easy to take it up a notch with steak seasoning. This is the best steak seasoning for adding depth and complexity to your steak; it will bring out the best in whatever cut you’re using!

With ingredients like red pepper flakes, garlic powder, flakey salt, and fragrant herbs – this blend of spices is often found in the iconic Montreal steak seasoning. But while you can find combinations of these ingredients in store-bought seasonings, nothing truly compares to the flavor of making your own.

Seriously, you won’t be able to eat steak without this steak seasoning mix ever again!

Why You’ll Love My Steak Seasoning

  • Make it how you like. You can control the exact ratio of ingredients to make your perfect homemade steak seasoning. Whether you want a bit more onion powder or a little less salt, the choice is yours!
  • It’s affordable. This Montreal steak seasoning mix is made with ingredients that you can find at any grocery stores. You can make a large batch that will last you for months – without breaking the bank.
  • Not just for steak. Don’t let the name fool you; this steak seasoning recipe is great for all types of meats. Try it on chicken, pork chops, burgers – you name it! Or why not sprinkle some over veggies for a unique flavor twist?

Why Should You Season Steak?

Seasoning steak helps to bring out its natural flavors, making it taste even more delicious!

From filet mignon to flat iron steak – you should always season your meat with salt and black pepper before cooking. However, this steak seasoning mix will make a good steak the best it can be.

The salt in steak seasoning helps to draw out moisture creating a brine, which the steak will then reabsorb if left to marinate. This process ensures you end up with a delicious and tender steak.

Then with the addition of herbs and spices in this steak seasoning blend, you get an explosion of flavor that will leave your taste buds wanting more!

How to Season Steak

There are no right or wrong ways to use steak seasoning – it’s all about personal preference. Some people season their steaks many hours before cooking, whereas others prefer to season just before.

For the best results, season your steak around an hour before cooking. This will give the salt time to work its magic and the herbs to infuse the steak with amazing flavor.

But if you’re short on time, that’s ok; it’ll still be delicious! If you have no time to let the steak marinate, always cook it right after applying the dry steak rub. This is because the salt will begin drawing moisture, and it won’t have time to reabsorb the salty brine if cooking right away.

As for how much seasoning to use, it depends on the meat cut. Thicker beef steaks need more seasoning than thinner ones, so just use your best judgment.

The best way to season steak with Montreal steak seasoning is by using it as a dry rub. With this in mind, let’s look at how to season steak:

  1. Begin by patting the steak with a paper towel.
  2. Brush a little olive oil over the steak, then generously sprinkle your steak seasoning mix over your meat – don’t forget the sides of the steak too!
  3. Rub the steak seasoning into the steak with your hands until it is evenly distributed.
  4. If you’re not using your steak immediately, you can cover it and place it in the fridge.
  5. Always let your steak come to room temperature for thirty minutes before cooking. This will ensure a delicious, evenly cooked steak every time!

Ingredients For The Best Steak Seasoning

  • Sea salt
  • Black pepper
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Paprika
  • Oregano
  • Rosemary

For the exact amounts needed, please see the recipe card below.

Instructions For Montreal Steak Seasoning

  1. Whisk together all of the ingredients.
  2. Store in an airtight container for as long as your spices are good for.
What is the best salt to use when making steak seasoning?

There are so many different types of salt to choose from. However, we don’t want to use ordinary table salt when it comes to steak seasoning! Opt for a coarse-ground salt with large, flakey crystals.

The larger salt crystals allow you to evenly distribute the seasoning, and they dissolve slowly, which ensures the steak taste won’t be too salty.

Sea salt and kosher salt can be used in place of one another when cooking, so either works perfectly in this recipe. As does Himalayan pink salt, which can add a subtle hint of flavor to your steak.

How long does steak seasoning last?

Dried herbs and spices don’t really have an expiry date (unless otherwise specified), but the flavors will start to fade after a little while. When making this homemade steak seasoning mix, it’s best to store it in an airtight container, like a mason jar, and use it within 2 years!

Keep your Montreal steak seasoning away from overexposure to light, heat, and moisture to prolong its lifespan.

What add-ins can I include in my steak seasoning mix?

The great thing about making your own steak seasoning is that you can customize it however you like. To give it a smoky flavor, use smoked paprika; for a bit more kick, why not try cayenne pepper or chili powder? Some steak seasonings can also include a sweet element, so if this is what you like, add some brown sugar to your spice blend!

What is the best way to cook a seasoned steak?

Try cooking your steak in a pan for a quick and easy steak dinner. A cast-iron skillet is great for creating an even layer of heat which helps to seal in the juices and flavor. A grilled steak is also delicious and has that beautiful chargrill flavor profile. For thicker cuts of meat,  reverse searing steak is especially effective.

No matter your cooking method, consider the different levels of cooked steak and cook accordingly. A well-seasoned steak will taste amazing whether it’s rare, medium, or well done!
