Homemade Bread Stuffing is an easy side dish to make if you don’t want to stuff a turkey! A few ingredients combine to make it flavorful and not too soggy!
Homemade bread stuffing is something you want on your holiday tables this year. Not only does it taste a millions times better than the stovetop variety you can buy in a box but its also a great way to make the seasoning of this dish pair better with the seasonings in other dishes so instead of having several different items on a plate, you have a meal where all of the components complement each other.
This homemade stuffing recipe is incredibly easy to make (I promise). I will warn you though, once you know how to make stuffing in the oven, you may be inclined to only eat homemade stuffing for the rest of your life, turning up a nose to anything from a box. Okay, maybe it’s not that life-changing, but it does change the tune of your holiday dinner.
You don’t have to wait for the holidays to enjoy a delicious homemade bread stuffing though, it can be made as often as you have stale bread in the house. Pairing well with my oven-roasted chicken and canned green beans with bacon recipes too!
How to make homemade stuffing
- Slice your bread into strips that are about 1/4 wide and 2 inches long. Spread the bread in one even layer on two baking sheets.
- Bake at 375ºF for about 10 minutes to help dry the bread out.
- In a large saucepan, cook the bacon until it’s just crisp. Then remove it from the pan and chop.
- Add the butter to the bacon fat that’s in the pan.
- Add the veggies, salt, and pepper, cooking until soft, about 5-8 minutes.
- Toss the dried bread, chopped bacon, and sauteed veggies together.
- Whisk together the broth and the eggs. Pour the mixture over the bread crumb mixture and toss it all to combine.
- Pour the mix into a 9×13 baking dish.
- Cover with foil and bake for 15 minutes.
- Uncover and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until it’s a golden brown.
How do you dry bread for stuffing?
Drying bread for stuffing is important if you don’t want a soggy lump of goo on a plate. If you find that your bread isn’t super dry, you can dry it out in the oven or lay the pieces on the counter for a few days to dry out. There’s a step in the recipe where you’re asked to place the bread in the oven, this also helps to dry out your bread slices.
What kind of bread is best for stuffing?
Stuffing can be made with any of your favorite bread options. Many people choose to go with a white bread variety due to how easy it is to flavor and dry out, but you can pick anything from wheat to waffles if you truly wanted to. The most important part is to make sure that the bread is dried before using it.
