How to Know if Canned Food is Bad

Canned food is easy to keep safe and will stay good for a long time. But it is important to know when canned food is bad, as eating it can be very dangerous.

The danger of eating bad canned food is botulism. Botulism is a bacteria that thrives in food that is improperly stored food and it releases a toxin that is deadly.

The toxin will attack the body’s nerves, which can weaken the muscles and even the lungs. If the lungs become weak enough, it can cause death. While botulism is dangerous, it is very rare.

  • If canned food has a broken seal or if the can lid or can is bulging.
  • If the can is leaking at all.
  • If the can is rusty anywhere.
  • Mold on the lid.
  • The can releasing pressure.
  • Bubbles rising to the top of the can (not bubbles from opening the lid, but bubbles actively rising through the liquid in the can.
  • Bad odor.
  • A dented can.

If you do find you have a can of bad food, be sure to carefully dispose of it so that no one else can eat it – either person or animal.

Be sure you sterilize the area that the can was in and any place that the contents from the can touches. Also, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly.
