My 2 Best Tips For Making Garlic and Herb Seasoning

Fresh Dried Herbs: Use recently purchased dried herbs for the most potent flavor, as herbs lose their intensity over time; check expiration dates before mixing.

Scale as Needed: This recipe makes about ¾ cup; double or triple the batch to have extra on hand or to package as homemade gifts.

For deeper flavor, I like to lightly toast the dried herbs in a dry skillet for 30-60 seconds before combining them with the other ingredients.

I keep my blend in an airtight glass jar away from heat and direct sunlight to maintain freshness for up to 6 months.

You can sprinkle this garlic and herb seasoning on so many things! I love using it on my morning scrambled eggs, as a topping for avocado toast, or even mixed into butter for an instant compound butter that makes any meal feel special.

For easy use on meats or veggies, just toss or rub them with olive oil and then sprinkle on or rub in the seasoning mix. It will taste fabulous!

    Notes

Growing Your Own: You can read more about herbs and how to grow and harvest herbs.
Maximize Flavor: For the best results, crush the dried herbs slightly between your fingers as you add them to release their essential oils and maximize flavor.
Perfect for Gifting: This seasoning makes an excellent gift when packaged in small glass jars with a decorative label—perfect for holidays, housewarmings, or thank-you presents.
Create Variations: Consider making multiple batches with slight variations (one with more Italian herbs, another with added smoked paprika, or a salt-free version) to have different flavor profiles on hand for various dishes.
Balanced Blend: This garlic and herb seasoning blend combines classic Mediterranean herbs with the bold flavor of garlic, creating a balanced all-purpose seasoning that enhances rather than overpowers your dishes.

    Recipe FAQs

What can I use this seasoning on?

My herb and garlic seasoning is delicious in so many meals. You can easily substitute your usual salt and pepper, and I promise you won't be disappointed! It can be used as a dry rub for oven-roasted chicken or grilled T-bone steak, added to soups or stews for extra flavor, or sprinkled on veggies, like my oven-roasted cauliflower, crispy roasted potatoes, or mashed potatoes.

Can you use fresh herbs instead of dried ones?

I love using fresh, earthy herbs when I cook. But in this case, dried herbs are best. We want to store our fresh, flavorful seasoning for future use, and fresh herbs just don't last as long. With that being said, if you have an herb garden and an abundance of fresh herbs, you can absolutely harvest and preserve herbs yourself to use in this recipe!

How long does garlic herb seasoning last?

If stored in an airtight container, my herb and garlic seasoning will stay fresh at room temperature for months. I like to keep mine in a Mason jar, and then I just give it a little shake before using it to get everything nice and mixed up.

Three glass jars of homemade spice blends sit on a dark cloth; the front jar features a vibrant garlic and herb seasoning topped with red pepper flakes. Text reads “homemade garlic + herb seasoning.”.
