My 2 Best Tips For Making Pizza Sauce With Crushed Tomatoes
Don't Rush the Garlic: When cooking the garlic in oil, aim for golden but not brown. This step creates the aromatic foundation of your sauce. Burnt garlic will impart a bitter taste that's impossible to fix later.
Thickening Sauce: If your sauce seems too thin, simply continue simmering uncovered for an additional 5-10 minutes to allow more moisture to evaporate. Different brands of crushed tomatoes vary in water content, so cooking time may need adjustment.

Perfect homemade pizza sauce starts with quality crushed tomatoes and just a few simple ingredients. This 20-minute recipe delivers authentic Italian flavor without hours of simmering.
The basic recipe provides an excellent foundation while allowing you to add your favorite herbs and spices to make it uniquely yours. If it's fresh herbs season, I'll chop up some basil, thyme, and oregano to add. Or just add anywhere from a couple teaspoons to a tablespoon of dried Italian seasoning!
If I have an extra few minutes, I'll do a batch session of this sauce with multiple cans of tomatoes. Since this recipe can be prepared once and extra portions frozen for up to 6 months, it's easy to make some ahead. This makes your next pizza night pretty much effortless!

Pizza Sauce With Crushed Tomatoes
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic (minced (or 1 teaspoon prechopped garlic))
- 1 can crushed tomatoes ((28 ounces))
Instructions
- In a small sauce pan cook the oil and garlic together over medium heat until the garlic starts to smell good, it'll only take a minute or so once the oil is hot.
- Add the tomatoes and simmer until it thickens a bit, about 15 minutes.

- Season with salt and pepper to taste (I like ½ teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of pepper).
- Use on your favorite homemade pizzas, calzones, and more!

- If you don't need all of the pizza sauce for your pizza, simply store leftovers in a freezer container in the freezer for up to 6 months. Just thaw fully before using.
Notes
- When stored in an airtight container, this sauce keeps in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- For longer storage, freeze portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 6 months. Allow frozen sauce to thaw completely in the refrigerator before using.
- I use wide mouth half pint mason jars with just under 1 cup in it, giving it enough room to expand when frozen. This is enough for one pizza at my house.

Yes! This basic recipe creates an excellent foundation for customization. Popular additions include 1 teaspoon each of dried oregano and basil, or 1-2 tablespoons of fresh herbs added near the end of cooking. Red pepper flakes can add a nice heat if desired.
If your sauce seems too thin, simply continue simmering uncovered for an additional 5-10 minutes to allow more moisture to evaporate. Different brands of crushed tomatoes vary in water content, so cooking time may need adjustment.
While primarily designed for pizza, this sauce works wonderfully for simple pasta dishes. For pasta sauce, consider adding a pinch of sugar to balance acidity and additional herbs like basil and oregano for a more complex flavor profile.
