How to Make Quick Barbecue Sauce

Step 1: In a medium sauce pan over medium-low heat cook the onion and garlic in the olive oil until the onion softens. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine.
Step 2: Simmer over low heat for 20 minutes. If you like it smoother, let the BBQ sauce cool for 10-15 minutes and then blend until your desired consistency.
Recipe FAQs
This homemade sauce will keep for about two weeks when stored properly in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The vinegar helps preserve it naturally, but for maximum freshness, always use clean utensils when serving.
If you prefer a thicker consistency, simply continue simmering the sauce uncovered for an additional 5-10 minutes after the initial cooking time. The liquid will reduce and create a more concentrated, thicker sauce.
If you're out of Worcestershire sauce, try a combination of soy sauce with a touch of vinegar and a pinch of allspice. This won't perfectly replicate the flavor, but it will provide similar umami depth to your barbecue sauce.

Expert Tips
- Perfect Sautéing: Take your time with the onions and garlic at the beginning. A slow, gentle sauté until they're translucent (but not browned) creates a foundation of flavor that makes all the difference.
- Flavor Balancing: The perfect barbecue sauce is all about harmony between sweet, tangy, and savory elements. If your sauce tastes too sweet, add more vinegar; too tangy, a bit more honey.
- Easy-Use Storage: Transfer your cooled sauce to a squeeze bottle for easy application and storage. It's mess-free and makes your homemade creation feel restaurant-quality!
- Creative Applications: Don't reserve this sauce just for grilling! Use it as a glaze for meatloaf, a flavorful addition to baked beans, or mixed with mayo for a spectacular sandwich spread.

Popular Homemade Condiments
Sometimes we run out of a condiment in our house that someone really loves with a certain meal, so I've collected some recipes to keep on hand just in case! And then sometimes we just love a homemade version better than store-bought and we keep making that one.
- Easy Homemade Teriyaki Sauce: Totally perfect for your fave restaurant meal at home.
- Homemade Marinara Sauce: Easy to make in the crockpot and tastes better than anything you could buy at the store!
- Brown Sugar Mustard Glaze for Ham: Super easy and can be done in less than 10 minutes — and you'll know what's in it unlike those packets that come with the ham.

Quick Barbecue Sauce Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ small onion (finely chopped (about ⅓ cup))
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 cup ketchup
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- ⅓ cup honey
- 4 tablespoons white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon spicy brown mustard
- 1 teaspoon chili paste (optional for spiciness)
Instructions
- In a medium sauce pan over medium-low heat cook the onion and garlic in the olive oil until the onion softens, about 5 minutes. Take care not to burn the onions and garlic and stir often. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine. Simmer over low heat for 20 minutes.
- The onion and garlic will still be about the size you cut them into. If you like chunky BBQ sauce then the sauce is ready to use. If you like it smoother then let the BBQ sauce cool for 10-15 minutes and blend until smooth.
- The barbecue sauce can be used right away or refrigerated up to 2 weeks in the fridge.
Notes
- This recipe makes 2 cups of sauce, or 32 servings of 1 tablespoon each.
- Make this sauce a day or two ahead to give it time to reach the best flavor. It will get better as it sits in the fridge for a day or two!
- If you like your barbecue sauce on the spicy side then you can add a teaspoon of chili paste.
- For a smoother sauce, blend the mixture after it has cooled to break down the onions. I like to use a taller saucepan for cooking the sauce so I can use the immersion blender right in the pan for blending.
