Cinnamon sugar is the classic combination of two simple ingredients that can completely transform a dessert or breakfast. However, knowing the right cinnamon and sugar ratio can make all the difference when creating the perfect balance of flavor.

I've had some pretty disappointing cinnamon sugar treats that were either too sweet or too spicy, which is why I'm so excited to share my tried and true cinnamon and sugar mixture!

    Recipe FAQs

What is the best cinnamon-to-sugar ratio?

I find the best ratio for cinnamon sugar is 8:1. That means for every 8 parts of sugar, add 1 part of cinnamon. For example, this recipe uses 2 cups of sugar and 4 tablespoons of cinnamon. This gives the perfect balance of sweetness and spice without being too overpowering!

What are some other ways I can use Cinnamon Sugar?

You can mix some into your coffee for a homemade cinnamon latte, sprinkle it on top of buttermilk French toast, oatmeal (maple and brown sugar oatmeal, pecan and raisin oatmeal, and Instant Pot apple oatmeal would be great choices!), or on pastries like an apple Danish.

What type of cinnamon should I use?

You can buy two main types of cinnamon: Cassia cinnamon and Ceylon cinnamon. Cassia is what we usually see in grocery stores and comes in a few different varieties, such as Vietnamese or Chinese. Ceylon cinnamon is much harder to find but has a more delicate flavor and is sometimes called ‘true’ cinnamon.

    Expert Tips

    • You can use white granulated sugar, light or dark brown sugar, or any other type of sugar you prefer!
    • Different varieties of cinnamon are available. Some are spicier, some are sweeter, and others have different undernotes. Use whichever type you like best or mix and match!
    • Cinnamon pairs well with other warm spices such as nutmeg and allspice. Substituting a small amount of cinnamon with these spices can give your cinnamon-sugar a fun new flavor, perfect for seasonal baking.
