My vanilla glazed icing recipe is sometimes all you need to elevate any dessert! This well-loved icing is simple yet always delicious. Honestly, an icing glaze recipe is one every avid baker should know! As we add melted butter to this recipe for glaze icing, it allows for a smooth and velvety texture - which keeps the icing firm but still soft when set.

Plus, as the base of my glaze icing recipe is white, you can get creative and add some food coloring. Simply add a few drops of your desired color and mix it through - it's that easy! This is perfect if you're using this recipe for glaze icing on some sweet treats for a party or celebration.

    Recipe FAQs

How long does glazed icing last?

This recipe for glaze icing can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. When ready to use it, give it a good stir to get it back to its original consistency. Be sure to cover it well; otherwise, the top may start to set!

How long does it take for this glazed icing recipe to set?

This will ultimately depend on the climate and temperature of your kitchen. Also, if you have used a thick layer of glaze, it will take longer to set. Generally, the glaze will take about 30 minutes to set. However, it may take longer if your kitchen is particularly warm or humid.

What do I do if my glazed icing is lumpy?

If your glazed icing looks lumpy, continue whisking until the mixture is smooth - don't worry; a few little lumps won't ruin your icing! But, if you want to eradicate the chance of any lumps completely, or maybe your powdered sugar looks a little clumped, simply sift it before adding the rest of the ingredients.

Can I make this glaze icing ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare this glaze up to 5-7 days in advance and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When ready to use, let it come to room temperature and give it a good stir. You might need to add a drop or two of milk to reach the desired consistency again.

    Expert Tips

    • Use Room Temperature Butter: While the recipe calls for melted butter, make sure it's not too hot when you add it to the powdered sugar. Let it cool slightly so it doesn't "cook" the sugar and create lumps.
    • Add Milk Gradually: The key to perfect consistency is adding your milk one tablespoon at a time. It's much easier to thin out a thick glaze than to thicken a runny one! Test your glaze by lifting your spoon—it should fall in a ribbon that disappears back into the glaze within 8-10 seconds for a standard consistency.
    • Warm Your Milk Slightly: Using slightly warm milk (just 10-15 seconds in the microwave) helps the glaze mix more smoothly and reduces the chance of lumps forming.
    • Apply Glaze to Slightly Warm Treats: For a beautiful, even coat that slightly soaks in, apply your glaze when your baked goods are still slightly warm (not hot). For a more defined layer of icing that sits on top, wait until your treats are completely cool.

    Glaze Icing Flavors

I add vanilla extract to my glaze icing recipe; however, you could easily swap this out for another flavor.

    Some other great options include

    • Lemon
    • Almond
    • Peppermint
    • Orange

Experiment with different flavors to find your favorite!

Please note if you're going to alter the flavor with something like fruit juice or coffee, you'll need to adjust the amount of milk used. This is because the liquid will thin out the glaze. Simply add milk a little bit at a time until you're happy with the texture.

Desserts & Pastries Perfect For Glaze Icing

Honestly, the sky is the limit! This recipe is perfect for topping cakes, cupcakes, cookies, or even fruit.

This icing glaze recipe is the ideal consistency for pouring over baked goods, but don't forget - if you want it thicker or thinner, just alter the amount of milk used.

As with any icing, always wait for the dessert to cool completely before adding the glaze.

Here are some of my favorite baked goods that are even better when topped with this icing:

    • Soft cut out sugar cookies
    • Sugar cookie bars
    • Classic gingerbread cookies
    • Snickerdoodle cookies
    • Cranberry orange bundt cake
    • Easy cinnamon rolls
    • Lemon pound cake
    • Brown sugar cookies
    • Old-fashioned apple fritters
    • Yellow cupcakes
    • Pumpkin spice pancakes

I'm not even joking when I say this list could go on and on! My glazed icing recipe is so versatile and easy to make you'll always find yourself using it.
