BBQ Ground Beef Sliders ingredients
- Ground beef: While a lot of beef sliders use roast beef, we’re keeping it simple with ground beef so we can cook our filling much faster. Less time cooking, more time eating.
- Onion: A diced onion will really help to add flavor, aroma, and a bit of natural sweetness into the filling.
- Salt: We just need a little salt to help bring out and enhance the flavors in this filling.
- BBQ sauce: Use your favorite BBQ sauce or one that you think would taste great with cheddar cheese as a contrast.
- Hawaiian rolls: We want to use that large pack of 12 dinner rolls. These will come in an orange bag and the rolls are stuck together making assembly very easy.
- Butter: Using melted butter over the top of the rolls will give it a nice golden color.
- Parsley: Adding fresh or dried parsley over the top will help to add a little color and flavor to the top of the rolls.
- Garlic: Everything is better with garlic and adding a little over the top of these rolls will really help to give us a great flavor in every bite.
- Cheddar cheese: You can use pre-sliced cheddar cheese or shred your own for this recipe.

Can I prepare BBQ Beef sliders in advance?
Yes, you can prepare the rolls by removing them from the packaging and slicing them in half, then return them to the package and them seal closed until ready to use. You can also make the BBQ beef filling and keep it stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just use when ready and follow the recipe directions. Do not assemble sliders in advance as the bread will become soggy from the filling, so only assemble just before baking.
Tips for Making Ground Beef Hawaiian Roll Sliders
Here are some tips to help you make the best ground beef sliders your family has ever tasted:
- Use 90/10 ground beef: For the juiciest and most flavorful sliders, I’d use a ground beef ratio of 90% lean and 10% fat. This will keep the meat moist and add flavor without being too greasy.
- Remove excess fat: If the ground beef you use has a higher fat content, then you’ll want to spoon out any excess fat after browning the meat. Too much fat can make your Hawaiian rolls soggy!
- Sauté the onion: Don’t skip sautéing the onion with the ground beef – this adds a ton of flavor to the filling.
- Don’t forget the butter: The butter, parsley, and garlic glaze take these sliders to the next level. Be sure to brush it generously on top of the rolls before baking. This will also give the rolls a nice golden color.
- Make the filling ahead of time: You can make the ground beef filling ahead of time and store it in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble and bake the sliders. It’ll last well for up to 3 days.
Variations/Substitutions for Ground Beef Sliders
There are a few ways you can change up this recipe and make it your own. Here are some ideas:
- Use a different type of ground meat: If you’re not a fan of ground beef, you can easily swap it out for another ground meat such as turkey, chicken, or pork.
- Pick your favorite BBQ sauce: Any BBQ sauce will work for this recipe. Sweet, smoky, or spicy – it’s up to you! You can also mix in some hot sauce for an extra kick.
- Mix up the cheese: Cheddar cheese works great because it melts well, but you can use any type of cheese you like.
- Add some toppings: Pineapple slices, red onions, bacon, or pickles are all great topping options for these sliders.
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds: For some extra flavor, sprinkle sesame seeds on top of the butter topping before baking.
- Try a different type of bread: I love how Hawaiian rolls come still connected, making it easy to assemble a large batch of sliders. But any bread rolls would work! Just pack them tightly in the baking dish before adding the filling. Pretzel rolls or brioche buns could be fun choices.
- Make them mini: Use dinner rolls instead of sandwich rolls for bite-sized sliders. They’d be perfect as party appetizers!
How to Serve BBQ Beef Sliders
These sliders are the star of any backyard BBQ or game-day spread (in my opinion!), so you don’t need to go crazy with the sides. A few simple options would be:
- Chips and dip – my chili cheese dip would be delicious with these sliders!
- Herby creamed potatoes
- Coleslaw
- Cheesy hashbrown casserole
- Sweet potato fries
- Spinach salad with poppy seed dressing
- Baked beans (Bush’s copycat recipe)
- Grilled pineapple
- Avocado corn salad
- Macaroni salad
- Grilled corn on the cob
How to Store Sliders with Ground Beef
Store leftover sliders in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them in a baking dish and cover with foil. Bake at 350°F for about 15 minutes or until the ground beef reaches 165°F.
FAQS
Make sure your oven is preheated to 350°F, and you cover the baking dish with foil while baking. This keeps the heat in, melting the cheese and cooking the sliders without burning the bottoms. You can also place your baking dish on the top rack of the oven and put an empty baking sheet on the bottom rack to help diffuse the heat.
Hot fillings can cause the bottom of your sliders to become soggy. To avoid this issue, let your ground beef mixture cool slightly before assembling the sliders. Also, some cheeses release more moisture than others, so choose a cheese that melts well but doesn’t release too much liquid – like cheddar!
Aside from insulated serving dishes or electric food warmers, you can also use a slow cooker set on the “warm” setting to keep your sliders warm for a crowd. For a larger batch of sliders, place them on a baking sheet and cover with foil, then keep them in a warm oven (around 200°F) until ready to serve. Just keep an eye on them so they don’t accidentally overcook.
