    What is Wassail

Wassail is a Nordic beverage traditionally drunk around the holidays. It’s a medieval Christmas drinking ritual to ensure a good apple harvest the following year.

Why This Homemade Wassail Recipe Is The BEST

The spices, fresh herbs, and combination of juices make this a great layer of flavors.

    1. Combine all of the ingredients together in a saucepan and bring it to a boil.

Longbourn Farm Tips for Making This THE BEST wassail recipe

    • Be sure to let the wassail simmer for the time in the recipe or longer. This lets all the flavors meld together.
    • Strain the wassail to remove any bits of whole spices and herbs.
    • You can garnish the wassail with orange and lemon slices and fresh rosemary and cranberries.

    Homemade Wassail FAQs

What's the difference between wassail and cider?

Honestly, nothing. But wassail has been known to contain more delicious spices and flavors.

How long does wassail keep for?

If you don’t drink it all while it’s warm, you can cool it down and store it within a pitcher in the fridge for up to 5 days. Just reheat before drinking if you want it warm (or drink it cold- it won’t hurt you to do so).

What is the difference between mulled cider and wassail?

There really isn’t any big difference between mulled cider and wassail. In this recipe, I added more juice types to the apple juice to differentiate the wassail from a mulled cider.

    What spice is wassail cider?

In this recipe, there is cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and rosemary.

    Where did wassail originate from?

Wassail originated from Anglo-Saxon roots. Originally it was a mulled ale with whole apples and other ingredients. Today, it is a spiced drink enjoyed around the holidays.
