Chocolate banana bread takes regular banana bread to a whole new level! Rich and chocolatey with a good balance of banana flavor.

I am always a fan of banana bread, but this chocolate banana bread is one of my all-time favorite versions. I’ll never say no to chocolate!

Like my chocolate chip banana bread recipe, this recipe starts out with creaming butter, sugar, and eggs together. Don’t skip on these steps! They are important for getting a good texture and rise to your bread. This is what the creamed butter, sugar, and eggs should look like.

I find that the texture of the banana bread is better when I actually don’t mash the bananas before hand. I just toss them in the bowl and let them break up as a mix them into the batter.

I actually keep bananas in the freezer if I’m not going to be able to use them in time before they get too ripe. If you leave them in the peels, they don’t turn brown!

This is when the magic happens! I love adding the chocolate to the batter and watching it turn dark as it mixes in. The batter for this bread is thicker, you can see the texture in these pictures.

This recipe makes one large loaf pan, or you can divide it up into smaller loaf pans. If you want to make muffins, you can even do that! It will make about 12-15 depending on how much batter is in the muffin tin.

Sprinkling mini chocolate chips on top of the chocolate banana bread batter is totally optional…but I mean, is it even a question of if you should or not? Just follow your heart on this one – it’s the right thing to do!

This chocolate banana bread will need to bake for quite a long time. It bakes best in the middle rack of the oven so it can get even heat throughout the loaf pan.

When you insert a toothpick into the loaf to see if it is done, it can be a little hard to distinguish between batter and chocolate from the chocolate chips. Chocolate is obviously fine, just make sure it’s not batter.

If you are like me and you appreciate a little gooey centered banana bread in your life, take it out a little early and your gooey-chocolate-loving heart will be as happy as can be!

I use a standard size loaf pan – 9 in x 5 in. If you have 2 smaller pans, that is also fine. Just adjust the baking time by about 15 minutes.
