🍋 Using real fruit juice instead of artificial flavors creates a drink that tastes bright, vibrant, and alive!
My 2 Best Tips For Making Citrus Lemonade
Strain Wisely: Decide whether you want pulp or not before you start. For a smooth drink, strain all juices through a fine-mesh strainer. For texture and fiber, leave some pulp but remove any seeds. A little pulp actually enhances the fresh fruit flavor and gives the drink more body.
Ice Strategy: Add ice directly to individual glasses rather than the pitcher to prevent dilution. If you must add ice to the pitcher, use frozen fruit cubes made from leftover citrus juice. This keeps the drink cold while actually concentrating the flavors as the ice melts.

My favorite thing about this drink is how easy it is. No simple syrup, no stovetop. Just mix it up and you're good to go. I'm all about easy, can you tell?
The other thing I love about this citrus lemonade recipe is that it's very easy to customize to your taste. I think that the recipe provided has a good balance of citrus flavors, sweetness, and tang but definitely taste as you go to make sure it's just right for YOU.
If you are hesitant about the grapefruit, don't be! It adds a really unique flavor that takes this citrus lemonade over the top. There is actually more grapefruit juice than lemon or orange juice, but it isn't overpowering. It brings all the other flavors together really nicely.

How To Make This Refreshing Lemonade
Step 1: When you start adding the water to your lemonade mixture, make sure it is warm! This is what helps the sugar to dissolve. If you want to serve the drink right away, use warm water and leave off about a cup and then top off your pitcher with lots of ice.
Step 2: That way you can still get everything dissolved but give the lemonade time to cool down without being diluted too much. As you add water, be sure to taste! You can also add less sugar at the beginning and adjust that as you go. But I promise, this drink isn't to sweet. I can't handle how sweet a lot of the store bought lemonade mixes are!
Step 3: I love to garnish this drink with basil or mint. The basil might sound crazy, but it is out of this world tasty! I promise, give it a try. The citrus is refreshing and then pairing it with the refreshing and fragrant basil really sends it over the top.

Orange Lemonade Variation
For a sweeter, more mellow citrus experience, try making orange lemonade by using 1 cup fresh orange juice, ½ cup fresh lemon juice, and omitting the grapefruit entirely.
This version has a beautiful golden color and appeals especially to those who prefer less tartness. The orange juice provides natural sweetness, so you might find you need less sugar than the triple citrus version.
This variation is perfect for kids' parties or anyone who wants that classic lemonade taste with a sunny twist.

Grapefruit Lemonade Variation
For the adventurous citrus lover, pure grapefruit lemonade offers a sophisticated, grown-up flavor profile. Use 1 cup fresh grapefruit juice and ½ cup fresh lemon juice for this version.
The result is beautifully tart with complex bitter notes that create an incredibly refreshing drink. This variation pairs wonderfully with savory foods and makes an excellent base for cocktails.
Don't skip the garnish here - fresh thyme or rosemary complements the grapefruit's botanical notes perfectly.
Recipe FAQs
While fresh is always best, you can substitute with high-quality bottled grapefruit juice in a pinch. Look for 100% juice with no added sugars. You might need to adjust the sweetness since bottled juice can vary in tartness compared to fresh.
Yes! This citrus lemonade actually tastes better after sitting for a few hours as the flavors blend together. Make it up to 2 days ahead and store covered in the refrigerator. Just give it a good stir before serving since natural separation will occur.
Start by reducing the grapefruit juice by half and increasing the orange juice. You can also add an extra tablespoon or two of sugar. Remember, you can always add more tartness, but it's harder to take it away once everything is mixed.
