Learning the proper kitchen knife uses is important for quick work in the kitchen! It’s also very important for keeping yourself safe while cooking.

Even with every kitchen having its own set of professional knives, we still have our favorites. The ones we pull out to use for almost any task.

But do you know what they were originally meant for, or what they’re called? When you find out the proper kitchen knife uses, you can start choosing the right ones for the job and find that cooking gets a little easier.

Here are a few common kitchen knives and their uses:

Paring knife

The paring knife is great for doing small detail prep work in the kitchen. They can handle small tasks like trimming different foods, coring, peeling ad segmenting fruit and vegetables.

Santoku Knife

The Santoku Knife is a great all-purpose kitchen knife that can be used for many uses including chopping, dicing, and mincing.

Chef’s Knife

The Chef’s Knife is another great all-purpose kitchen knife. With its large shape, it can be great for rocking back and forth to get good momentum when chopping, dicing, and mincing.

Bread Knife

The bread knife, as you may have guessed, is used for slicing bread. The serrated edge of the knife is great for cutting through the bread like a saw. It can cut straight through without squishing it, so every piece is as fluffy as intended.

A bread knife can also be used to cut a variety of meats and cheeses too!

Boning Knife

A boning knife is a long narrow kitchen knife that is also very flexible. It’s great for working with both cooked and uncooked meat as it can help to separate the bones.

If you eat a lot of fish, a boning knife or a fillet knife are the go-to knives for cutting the ribcage bones off of the fillets. With a little practice, you can cut out a lot of the bones, with sacrificing a lot of the fish meat.
