How to Make Sliders
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F.
- Slice your package of dinner rolls in half lengthwise to create a top and bottom half. This works best if you leave the rolls all stuck together instead of separating them individually.
- Place the bottom half of the bread onto a baking sheet or in a 9×13 baking dish. Set the top aside momentarily.
- In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, dijon mustard, sage, honey, salt, and pepper until well mixed. Then add some lemon juice for a good tart kick.
- Spread the sauce over the top of the bottom half of the dinner rolls (the cut side).
- Lay your slices of ham meat over the top of the dinner rolls.
- Lay your sliced cheese over the top of the ham, spreading it out evenly.
- Place the top half of the dinner rolls on top of your cheese.
- In another small bowl, combine the melted butter and parsley, and then brush it over the top of the sweet rolls.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese has melted.
- Serve warm, and enjoy!
Substitutions for Hot Ham and Cheese Sliders
Dinner rolls. You can use sweet rolls (like Hawaiian rolls) or regular dinner rolls, depending on what you have on hand or prefer. I used whole wheat Hawaiian sweet rolls in this recipe. Getting sweet rolls vs. regular rolls isn’t a big deal, but I think the sweet rolls really add to the whole ham and cheese slider experience.
Cheeses. Any cheese from provolone to swiss would taste great here but don’t be afraid to stick with cheddar since it’s simple and always a kid favorite too. Mozzarella and Jack cheese also work great.
Mustard. We are using Dijon mustard, but whole grain or any other mustard with a good texture that you love will work well with this recipe too.
Variations for Baked Ham and Cheese Sliders
You can use sliced turkey instead of sliced ham if you don’t enjoy ham, or you can use a combination of the two for an even more flavorful bite!
Any flavor variety of thinly sliced deli ham will work fine for this recipe, including black forest ham, honey ham, and smoked ham, so go ahead and choose your favorite!
Farmstead Recipe Tips
We use crushed sage for this recipe, but if you have fresh sage on hand, go ahead and use it! It is no secret that fresh herbs are my love language. Sage is one of my favorite herbs, and I think it is highly underutilized. It pairs so amazingly well with ham.
I used leftover ham I had, but you can totally use deli ham which I do all of the time. It’s one of my favorite things you can buy at the store! Buying cooked meat at the deli is so time-saving but don’t be afraid to make this a leftover ham recipe for after your holiday feasts.
Yes, you can prepare these sandwiches up to 24 hours in advance, meaning that you can make them the day before an event and save yourself some stress in the kitchen during the party.
Just assemble the sliders the day before and keep them in the fridge. Bake them before you’re ready to serve. I do not recommend letting them sit for much longer than that because the bread will get soggy from the mustard spread.
While these sliders taste best when fresh from the oven, you can keep these sliders stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat again before serving.
Sliders can be made and frozen for up to 3 months in an airtight container. I recommend wrapping in plastic wrap first. Then when you’re ready to eat them, allow them to thaw for a few hours in the fridge or on the counter before following along with the baking instructions.
Yes, there’s nothing stopping you from enjoying this sandwich chilled if desired. The gooey melty cheese, sweet, warm ham, and soft buttery bread in these hot ham and cheese sliders all pair well together for the ultimate experience.
Baked until hot and ready, these sandwich rolls are something that kids and adults alike will all enjoy. Made quickly and with simple ingredients, this recipe comes together easily and fast, so it’s sure to become one of your go-to favorites!
