How to Make Birthday Cake Balls
- Prepare the boxed cake mix per the instructions for a 9×13 pan.
- Allow the cake to cool completely.
- Crumble the cake into a large mixing bowl.
- Add in the frosting and then mix until well combined.
- Scoop out rounded tablespoons and place them onto a lined cookie sheet.
- Melt the chocolate with the oil in 30-second increments in the microwave until the chocolate is almost all melted. Stir to completely melt.
- Dip each cake ball into the chocolate, tapping the excess off.
- Add sprinkles, if desired.
- Allow the cake balls to set in the fridge.
Can you freeze cake balls?
Undipped or dipped, your cake balls can be frozen for up to 6 weeks, just make sure to let them thaw on the counter or in the fridge before eating.
Note that the chocolate coating may appear to sweat as it thaws, this is normal and harmless, but can be messy or cause colored sprinkles to have their colors run.
How big should cake balls be?
Cake balls weren’t meant to be too large. Think about the size of a standard chocolate or cake truffle, and you’re in the right ballpark. You want your cake balls to be big enough that they can be eaten within 1 or 2 bites.
For this reason, 1-2 tablespoons of mix formed into a cake ball are more than plenty. Don’t forget that the filling inside a cake ball is very sweet and rich so less is definitely more.
Do cake balls have to be refrigerated?
Believe it or not, they don’t actually need to be kept in the fridge. Due to the high sugar content, they can survive at room temperature.
Store your finished cake balls in a cool, dry place, and inside of an airtight container and you can expect them to last for up to 2 weeks!
If you do wish to keep them in the fridge, you can get another week out of their shelf life, but note that it may cause condensation on your cake pop’s coating causing them to become sticky.
