I know baked potatoes are a basic recipe, but this best baked potato recipe is one you definitely need to have in your recipe box! Once you know how to make amazing baked potatoes with that salty, crispy skin and fluffy interior, you’ll have an easy side dish for any meal.

A group of 4 russet potatoes on a white board.

It is true, baking potatoes takes time {I’ll be posting an instant pot recipe soon!} but it really is so easy, the majority of the time you are just waiting for the oven! My first tip for making the best baked potatoes is to use RUSSET potatoes {sometimes labeled IDAHO potatoes}.

Russets are starchy, NOT waxy, and starchy potatoes bake up fluffy and light. Russets make the best baked potatoes.

Drizzling olive oil on a raw russet potato on a lined baking sheet.

Once you have the right potato, making the best baked potato is as simple as 1, 2, 3. Frist, line your baking sheet with foil or parchment, that saves you a mess to clean up later.

Rubbing olive oil onto a raw russet potato.

Second, once you have your sheet tray lined, simple drizzle olive oil on the russet potatoes and then rub it in. You want to be sure that the whole potato is coated!

Sprinkling salt onto a russet potato.

Third, sprinkle with salt and make sure you get both sides. SO EASY! And the best baked potatoes are oh-so-delicious. The amount of time your potatoes need to bake will depend on how large they are. You can get a good feel for how big these ones are from the video, and they took about 30 minutes. If you are using really large potatoes, you may need to give them up to an hour.

Once the potatoes are baked up to perfection, top them however you choose. You could go plain and simple….or load them up {my preferred method!}. The best baked potatoes EVER! These are amazing with Grilled BBQ Chicken or Pan Seared Pork Chops or even Ham and Cheese Sliders – check them out!
