My 2 Best Tips For Making This Creamy Salad Dressing Recipe

Gradual Milk Addition: Add the milk one tablespoon at a time rather than pouring it all in at once to maintain control over consistency. This prevents the dressing from becoming too thin accidentally, which can't be easily corrected. Shake the jar thoroughly after each addition to properly assess the texture before adding more. Remember that the dressing will thicken slightly as it chills in the refrigerator.

Flavor Development: Allow the dressing to rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving to let the flavors combine properly. The garlic powder needs time to hydrate and distribute evenly throughout the mixture. The Worcestershire sauce will also mix better with resting time, creating a more balanced and complex flavor than when served immediately.

I always use the "shake and pause" technique by shaking the jar vigorously for 10 seconds, then letting it settle for 30 seconds before checking consistency. This prevents over-thinning since many people add milk too quickly without allowing the ingredients to properly combine.

This creamy garlic salad dressing works beautifully on any type of salad, from simple garden greens to hearty Caesar-style romaine. Beyond salads, I love using it as a dip for fresh vegetables or as a spread on sandwiches and wraps.

You can also drizzle it over baked potatoes, use it as a sauce for grilled chicken, or even as a base for potato salad! I keep a jar in the fridge at all times because it's so versatile and adds instant flavor to whatever I'm making.

    Equipment

    • Ergo Spout

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup mayonnaise
    • ⅓ cup sour cream
    • 3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ½ teaspoon pepper
    • 2-3 tablespoons milk (see note)

    Instructions

    • Combine all ingredients except milk in a mason jar and shake well to combine.
    • Add milk 1 tablespoon at a time, stopping when the dressing reaches your desired consistency.
    • Adjust salt and pepper to taste, if desired.

    Notes

Milk Measurement: The milk measurement is variable because you will just add enough to make it the consistency you like.
Flavor Variations: Experiment with fresh herbs like dill, chives, or parsley for extra flavor and color. Use half the amount if using dried herbs, and add a squeeze of lemon juice to brighten the taste.
Mixing Method: Use a mason jar for easy mixing and storage, or whisk in a bowl if preferred. Either way, ensure all ingredients are fully incorporated before adding milk.
Storage: Store the dressing in a mason jar or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week for best quality and food safety.

    Recipe FAQs

What if my dressing is too thick or too thin?

If too thick, add milk one teaspoon at a time until you reach desired consistency. If too thin, add a small amount of mayonnaise or sour cream to thicken it back up. Always adjust gradually since it's easier to thin than thicken dairy-based dressings.

Can I substitute Greek yogurt for the sour cream?

Yes, Greek yogurt makes an excellent substitute and adds extra protein to your dressing. Use the same amount as called for with sour cream. Plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt works best to avoid adding unwanted sweetness to your savory dressing.

Can I make this dressing dairy-free?

Yes, substitute the mayonnaise with vegan mayo and replace the sour cream with cashew cream or dairy-free sour cream alternatives. Greek yogurt alternatives work well too if you can find unsweetened varieties. The texture might be slightly different but still delicious.

Wow!! Perfect. Easy, ingredients we have and exactly what I wanted! It’s more in the vein of a Caesar dressing than a ranch, but easier to make. Thank you!
