Why You'll Love This BBQ Crock Pot Meatballs Recipe

These BBQ crock pot meatballs have been my secret weapon for stress-free entertaining for years. I first made them for a Super Bowl party when I was hosting 20 people and needed something simple.

If you love hosting, these meatballs are great party snacks. I've served these at birthday parties, potlucks, holiday gatherings, and regular Tuesday dinners when I need something that makes everyone happy.

The beauty of crockpot BBQ meatballs is their versatility. Sometimes I serve them as perfect appetizer with toothpicks, other times they're the main dish over rice, mashed potatoes, or tucked into hoagie rolls. My kids request them constantly, and I love that I can prep everything in under five minutes.

    Recipe Ingredients

    • BBQ Sauce: This is where you can really customize! Smoky barbecue sauce is my preference for depth, but sweet honey garlic meatballs create a family-friendly flavor, and spicy chipotle BBQ adds a nice kick.
    • Meatballs: Italian-seasoned meatballs add extra flavor, while plain ones let the BBQ sauce shine. Homemade meatballs are fantastic if you have time, but frozen saves precious minutes.
    • Water: Consider using beef broth, chicken stock, or vegetable broth instead for richer flavor and delicious sauce. The liquid creates steam that keeps everything moist during the long cooking time.

For the exact amounts needed, please see the recipe card below.

    Equipment

    • Slow Cooker
    • Measuring Cups + Spoons
    • Liquid Measuring Cups

    Ingredients

    • 28 ounces meatballs (1 package)
    • 18 ounces bbq (any sauce)
    • ¼ cup water
    • 2 teaspoons parsley (fresh, chopped)

    Instructions

    • Pour the meatballs, sauce, and water into a slow cooker. Slow cooker liner is optional.
    • Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.
    • Top with fresh parsley if necessary.

    Notes

Use any type of meatball you prefer: Ground beef, pork, turkey, or even vegetarian meatballs would all work fine!
Switch up the BBQ sauce: There is no end to the different types of BBQ sauces available. I prefer a smoky sauce, but a honey or spicy sauce would also be delicious.
Use stock or broth instead of water: Stock or broth will add extra flavor to the meatballs.
Make your own meatballs: I use premade meatballs to save time, but you can also make your own from scratch. Try these Swedish meatballs or Italian meatballs next time!
Sweet & Tangy Version: Replace half the BBQ sauce with grape jelly or apricot preserves for that classic party meatball flavor everyone recognizes from potlucks.
Add veggies: Chopped onions or bell peppers would make a tasty addition to this crockpot BBQ meatball recipe.

How to Make Crock Pot BBQ Meatballs

    BBQ Crock Pot Meatballs FAQs

How do you thicken BBQ sauce for meatballs?

If the BBQ sauce you use is a little watery, you can thicken it up by adding a cornstarch slurry. Just mix equal parts cornstarch and cold water in a small bowl until smooth. I'd use around 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and 1 tablespoon of water. Then, add the slurry to the crockpot and stir well. However, the BBQ sauce will thicken naturally as it cooks. Check the consistency towards the end of the cooking time, and if it's still too thin for your liking, add the cornstarch slurry.

How long can I keep meatballs in the slow cooker?

Cook the BBQ meatballs in a crockpot on low heat for 8 hours or on high heat for 4 hours. Once cooked, you can keep the meatballs in the slow cooker in the ‘warm’ setting for up to 2 hours before serving.

Can I use frozen meatballs for this recipe?

Yes, frozen meatballs work perfectly and are actually what I recommend. There's no need to thaw them first—just add them directly to the slow cooker with the sauce.

    Expert Tips

    • Choose quality meatballs: While any frozen meatballs work, investing in better-quality ones makes a noticeable difference in texture and flavor. I prefer Italian-style meatballs for their seasoning, but plain beef or turkey meatballs work beautifully too.
    • Stir gently halfway through: If you're home during cooking, give everything a gentle stir at the halfway point to ensure even coating. Use a rubber spatula to avoid breaking the meatballs apart, and be careful not to stir too vigorously.
    • Layer your flavors: For extra depth, add a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, a dash of garlic powder, or a sprinkle of smoked paprika to the bbq sauce before cooking.
    • Bind It Well: If you are making the meatballs from scratch, use breadcrumbs and an egg to help bind the meatballs together. This prevents them from falling apart during cooking.
    • Season Well: Add herbs, spices, and garlic to enhance flavor. Consider mixing in grated cheese for an extra kick.

What to Serve with Crock Pot BBQ Meatballs

Stick some toothpicks in these tasty little bites and serve them as an appetizer at your next party or potluck. Or, serve them over a bed of white rice or pasta for a main meal. As sides, you can serve Avocado corn salad, Baked beans (Bush's copycat recipe), or Green bean casserole.

For a balanced meal, pair these meatballs with roasted vegetables, coleslaw, green salad, or steamed broccoli. If you're craving comfort food, serve them alongside mac and cheese, cornbread or potato salad for a satisfying dinner.

    Storage and Reheating Tips

Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container with sauce for up to 4 days in the fridge.

Freezer: Freeze cooled meatballs in sauce in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Reheating: Warm in the slow cooker on low for 1-2 hours, or microwave individual portions in 30-second intervals until heated through. You can also reheat in a covered pot on the stovetop over medium-low heat.

Make Ahead: Prepare the full recipe up to 2 days in advance. Store in the refrigerator, then reheat in the slow cooker on low for 2-3 hours before serving. If frozen, cook on slow cooker for 3-4 hours.

Keeping Warm: These meatballs hold exceptionally well on the "keep warm" setting for 2-3 hours, making them ideal for parties where guests serve themselves over time.
