Steamed fresh green beans are the unsung hero of side dishes! They may not be the flashiest dish, but they’re delicious when prepared correctly. My steamed green beans recipe always starts with fresh, crisp green beans.

Once your green beans are prepped, it's time to steam them. You can do this in a few different ways, but my preferred method is using a steamer basket. If you don't have a steamer basket, I'll cover how to steam green beans without one or by using the microwave or Instant Pot!

    Equipment

    • Medium-sized pot with lid
    • Steamer basket that will fit into your pot
    • Tongs

    Ingredients

    • 1 pound fresh green beans (washed, trimmed, and cut)
    • 1 cup water (or enough for 1 inch of water in bottom of pan)
    • 2 tabelspoon butter (optional)
    • 1 teaspoon seasonings (to taste)

    Instructions

    • Thoroughly wash and trim the ends off the green beans. Cut them if desired, or leave them whole.
    • Add about 1 inch of water to a medium-sized pot and bring it to a boil.
    • Put the steamer basket in the pot, making sure it's not touching the water.
    • Place the green beans into the steamer basket and cover with a lid.
    • Steam for about 3-5 minutes or until desired tenderness is reached.
    • Use heat-safe tongs or a slotted spoon to remove the green beans from the pot, being careful not to burn yourself with steam.
    • Season as desired and serve immediately.

    Notes

Bean Variety Options: I like to go for the thinner haricot verts variety, but standard green beans work just as well.
Prep Work is Essential: Make sure to wash and trim the ends of the beans before steaming.
Seasonings Options: Salt & pepper, garlic butter, lemon zest, balsamic glaze: Drizzle balsamic glaze, Parmesan cheese, soy sauce, and sesame oil are all great seasonings for green beans!
Add aromatics: Place crushed garlic cloves or lemon slices in the steaming water to infuse subtle flavor into the beans.
Storage and Reheating: Store leftover steamed green beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes or warm in a skillet with butter. They can be frozen for up to 3 months, though the texture will soften after thawing.

    Recipe FAQs

What’s the best method for steaming green beans?

A steam basket works well. For a steam basket, place it over boiling water in a pot. For the microwave, use a covered dish with a small amount of water.

How can I keep green beans crisp after steaming?

Serve them immediately or place them in an ice bath right after steaming to stop the cooking process.

How do you know when steamed green beans are done?

Steamed green beans are done when they're bright green and crisp-tender. Pierce one with a fork—it should go through easily but the bean should still have some resistance. Overcooked beans become dull green and mushy.

    Expert Tips

    • Fresh is yummy: Choose fresh, firm green beans for the best results.
    • Don't overcook: They should still have a slight bite when done. Overcooked green beans become mushy, which you don't want on your plate!
    • Don't overcrowd: Too many beans in the steamer basket is not good. You want the steam to circulate and cook the beans evenly.
    • Trap the steam: If using an alternative steaming method, make sure the lid fits snugly over the pan or dish. This will trap the steam and cook the beans perfectly.

Seasoning Guide For Steamed Green Beans Recipe

    • Salt and pepper: The classic combo that goes with just about every dish.
    • Garlic butter: Melt butter in a pan with minced garlic, then drizzle over the steamed green beans. This steak herb butter would also be delish!
    • Lemon zest: Fresh lemon zest adds a bright and citrusy flavor to the green beans. A little lemon juice would also work great.
    • Balsamic glaze: Drizzle balsamic glaze over the steamed green beans for a sweet and tangy twist.
    • Parmesan cheese: Sprinkle grated parmesan cheese on top for some salty, cheesy goodness.
    • Soy sauce: A dash of soy sauce adds a savory umami flavor to the green beans.
    • Sesame oil or flavored oils: Drizzle a small amount of sesame oil or other flavored oil over the green beans after steaming.
