How to Train a Puppy: Appropriate Play

10/28/15 | Animal and Land, Companion Animal, Dog Training Tips

As you all know by now, I am pretty strict when it comes to my dogs behavior. In all reality though, it doesn’t make them feel limited. The structure allows them to predict what’s expected of them and feel safe. Feeling like they have a trust worthy leader and safe makes my dogs calm and relaxed. A hyper dog does not mean it’s a happy dog. A wagging tail indicates excitement, not pleasure. There are moments when both can coincide but your dogs will be much more relaxed and peaceful when you assume the role as a pack leader.

I do let my dogs play. But I only let them play outside and within certain boundaries. Nothing turns into a dog fight faster then unbounded play.

This is why I also never take my dogs to the dog park. Many people don’t manage play and therefore my well-behaved and socialized dogs {watch the video for my definition of socialization} end up not wanting to play at all. They other dogs lack social boundaries and end up just being obnoxious. So, sit back, relax, and watch how to manage play between your dogs! Check out all the posts in this series here.
