One of the best parts of owning chickens is being able to feed them scraps from your kitchen. It's like having a mini compost bin that also produces eggs! But even though chickens are known for eating just about anything, it's important to make sure the food you give them is safe and nutritious.

So, can chickens have apples? Yes, they can! Apples are actually a great treat for chickens and provide them with many health benefits, such as:

Can Chickens Eat Apple Seeds?

You've probably heard stories about apple seeds being poisonous, and this is true to some extent. Whole apple seeds are usually harmless, but when they're broken down, they release a compound called amygdalin.

In the body, amygdalin turns into cyanide, which is toxic. Most chickens will likely swallow the seeds whole and pass them through their digestive system without causing harm. And if they did break down the seeds, the amount of cyanide produced would likely be too small to cause harm.

However, it's always better to err on the side of caution! I usually remove the seeds before giving apples to my chickens, just to be safe.

How Often to Feed Apples to Chickens

Treats like apples shouldn't make up the majority of a chicken's diet. Apples are very low in protein, an essential nutrient for chickens. A protein-rich diet is necessary for chickens to lay eggs and maintain healthy feathers. Apples also have a fairly high sugar content, which can cause digestive upset and obesity if given in excess.

For these reasons, apples should only be given as an occasional treat. I usually give my chickens half an apple each once a week.

Is There Any Fruit Chickens Cannot Eat?

Chickens can safely eat most fruits in moderation. However, there are a few exceptions. Citrus fruits, while safe for chickens to eat, can cause digestive upset if given in large quantities. 

Avocado flesh, pits, and skins contain a toxin called persin, which is harmful to chickens. Don't let your chickens get their beaks on any part of an avocado.

Green tomatoes are also not safe for chickens to eat. They contain a toxin called solanine, which can upset a chicken's digestive system. Only ripe, red tomatoes should be given to chickens.

Any fruit containing seeds or pits, such as cherries or peaches, should be pitted and the seeds removed before feeding chickens. As with apple seeds, these seeds/pits can contain small amounts of amygdalin, which is toxic.

Lastly, never give your flock moldy or spoiled fruits! Spoiled fruits contain harmful bacteria that might make chickens sick.
