How to Grill a T-Bone Steak
Melissa Griffiths
Learning How to Grill a T-Bone Steak is much easier than you think. A perfectly grilled steak layered with herby, buttery flavor is a delicious meal for any night of the week or to serve for a fun special occasion!
Preheat your grill on medium-high heat. If it has a temperature reading, it should be around 400ºF.
Season the T-Bone Steaks with salt and pepper.
Place them on the grill and cook for about 7 minutes.
Flip and cook on the opposite side for about 7minutes, or until the internal temperature reads 145ºF for a perfectly cooked medium done steak.
Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
For the Herb Butter
While the T-Bone Steaks are grilling, make the herb butter.
Mince fresh garlic, basil, thyme, rosemary, and chives.
Combine the softened butter with the salt, pepper, garlic, and minced herbs.
Mix until well combined and set aside at room temperature. This can be made ahead and refrigerated.
Serve with the Grilled T-Bone Steaks. I prefer to serve the herb butter at room temperature, so it doesn’t cool the steak too much.
Notes
The T-bone steaks used in this recipe were about 12 ounces each. If the T-Bone Steaks are smaller or thinner than about 1 or 1 ½ inches, the cooking time will need to be adjusted down by about 2 minutes. If the T-Bone Steaks are thicker, adjust the cooking time.
Let your steak sit out for 30-60 minutes before grilling. This allows it to cook more evenly and prevents the outside from overcooking while the inside remains cold.
For perfect grill marks, place your steak at a 45-degree angle to the grill grates. Don't overcrowd the grill; each steak should have enough room to cook properly.
After you remove the steak from the grill, let it rest for at least 5-10 minutes. This helps redistribute the juices, keeping the steak moist and flavorful.
