DIY Chicken Waterer
Melissa Griffiths
Creating a reliable DIY Chicken Waterer doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. This ingenious bucket-flip design provides continuous fresh water for your chickens while requiring minimal maintenance and costing just a fraction of store-bought alternatives.
1feed pan(large enough for the bucket to turn upside down)
Instructions
Put the lid on the bucket.
Make sure your bucket fits upside down in the feed pan with at least 2 inches around the edge.
Leave the bucket upside down in the feed pan and mark on the bucket ½ inch below the top edge of the feed pan so that when the water comes out, there will be ½ inch of space between the water and the top of the pan.
Take the bucket out of the feed pan and turn it right side up.
Drill three evenly spaced, ¼ inch holes in the bucket at the level where you marked the bucket.
Notes
Bucket Quality: Use food-grade buckets to avoid chemical contamination in your chickens' drinking water. Restaurant supply stores often sell used food-grade options at reasonable prices.Height Considerations: Position the water level at your chickens' back height for comfortable drinking. Bantam breeds need lower placement while larger birds benefit from elevated positioning.Seasonal Adjustments: Monitor water consumption during molting, egg-laying peaks, and hot weather when chickens require significantly more water than normal conditions.Capacity Planning: Calculate roughly one gallon per 10-12 adult chickens daily under normal conditions to determine if you need multiple waterers for larger flocks.
