My dog Poppy has been going a little crazy the past couple of days. We both long for the days to get warmer so we can spend more time outdoors! Poppy has canine allergies – grain and poultry – pretty badly.
She take a prescription medication and I’ve identified a couple foods that work well for her but nothing makes it go away completely. Canine allergies are tricky because they are typically environmental as well as food-based. And we just can’t predict environmental, especially because those are constantly fluctuating and changing. Even with her meds and special food, her itching is always at a peak this time of year.
This time of year, it is actually less of a nutrition problem and more of an energy problem. Pent up energy and excitement is released via itching. Then licking the itchy spots and then itching again. It’s a vicious cycle!
Even though it’s chilly out, we still walk almost every day. Because we don’t want to be out for very long, I try and increase the amount of energy she expends on the walk. First, I put her coat on. This lets us be more comfortable outside for longer. I also do a mix of exercise – free running which is more physical exercise and heeling which is more mental exercise. Both are equally draining for her. I also put on her doggy pack and fill the pockets with canned food. This is good especially on days when we really don’t want to be out for too long but still need to get that energy out!
Nutrition is only ever part of the solution to problems. 98% of the time, exercise is the other part. They work hand in hand!
