Savory beef hand pies are a delicious and easy meal to make with your family! Let the kids help you and they’ll be even more excited to eat.

This post is a collaboration with Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner. on behalf of the Beef Checkoff. I received compensation, but all opinions are my own.

Have you been cooped up more at home lately? We have too! It can be hard to figure out what to make for dinner every night, especially when take-out options are limited. These savory beef hand pies are the answer!

My kids loved helping me make these and they liked eating them too! I find that kids are always more willing to eat dinner when it’s something they helped make.

I developed this recipe to be kid-friendly but delicious for adults as well. The Ground Beef filling is flavorful,  rich and the gooey cheese sends these beef pies over the top.

While cooking with kids is fun, it’s important to keep things sanitary and clean. Here are some tips to help you keep everyone safe!

How to Safely Cook Beef

  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling raw meat.
  • Use separate plates, cutting boards, utensils for raw vs. cooked foods to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Following USDA guidelines for proper cooking of beef.
  • Refer to USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service resources for other food safety tips.

When is Ground Beef done cooking?

Ground beef is done perfectly when it is cooked to 160°F. The filling in these beef pies should be completely cooked before adding it to the pies. That way if little hands sneak a snack, it’s totally fine!

How to Make Beef Hand Pies

  • In a frying pan on medium heat, add the Ground Beef and spices.
  • When the Ground Beef is almost browned, add the onion.
  • Cook until the beef is completely cooked through (160°F) and the onions are translucent.
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  • Cut circles out of the pie crust, they should be about 4-6 inches in diameter. You should get 12-14 circles.
  • Divide the beef and cheese up evenly between the circles.
  • Fold the circles in half and press the edges together gently. Crimp them firmly with a fork.
  • Whisk the egg and water together. Brush it onto each beef hand pie.
  • Place the beef hand pies on a lined or greased sheet tray.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the tops are golden brown.
  • Serve with fresh cut veggies to make it a completely hand-held meal.

I hope you and your family love making these delicious beef pies as much as we did! It’s always fun to get into the kitchen together and make something together.

Mmm…I’d been thinking that it has been a while since I’ve made empanadas (an Argentinian, or other Latin American countries) take on hand pies. Maybe I’ll have to make this version too next time.
