Ordering Chicks!

02/23/16 | Chickens, Farm & Family

I love when spring time is in the air and my local feed store puts out the order-forms for chicks! I am really excited about what I ordered this year. I always just get a random assortment, I like to keep the hens and egg colors interesting :). I like to buy from my local feed store for a few reasons: the chicks are always guaranteed healthy, they are 80% guaranteed to be sexed correctly, and they have a really wide variety of breeds with no minimum order number. Sometimes hatcheries will need you to order 50 chicks or some other large amount, I don’t need that many!

Here is what I got! {Images link to source.}

Black Sex-link

These are called sex-link because the color of the chicken is linked to whether it’s a male or female. This is so nice if you need to be 100% sure you’re getting a hen! I got one of these pullets, so she will be black. They lay light brown eggs.

Blue Cochin

These are silly looking chickens because their feet are covered in feathers! They also come in a variety of colors, blue turns out like a soft grey color. They lay medium brown eggs.

Welsummer

These are a very classic looking chicken and the roosters are stunning! I also love that they lay dark brown chocolate covered eggs. I got a male and female.

Cuckoo Maran

These are speckled black and white chickens and are popular because they also lay really dark brown eggs. I am so excited to have one in my flock!

Gold and Silver-Laced Wyandotte

Laced wyandotte hens are lovely. Their feathers can be a wide variety of colors and will be outlined in black, giving them a stunning laced appearance. They lay a medium brown egg, can’t wait to have them in my flock!

Are you getting chicks this summer? If so, tell me what you’re getting!
