Instant Pot Chili is packed with flavor, easy to make, and family-friendly. This recipe can also be easily adapted for a slow cooker, either way, it’s amazing!
I love experimenting with my 8-quart Instant Pot and this pressure cooker chili is a recipe I had been wanting to try for ages. It turned out perfectly and has since become a simple staple of a recipe in our home. It’s got beans, meat, tomatoes, and spices all working together to create a harmonious bowl of comfort.
If you’re looking for a meatier recipe, you can check out my Meat Lover’s Easy Chili Recipe. It’s similar to this one in that it’s easy to throw together but there is a lot more meat for those of us feeling carnivorous.
Why You’ll Love Instant Pot Turkey Chili
- Make it fast or make it slow. You can use a slow cooker or your Instant Pot’s slow cooker option to make this recipe simmer on low heat for hours or you can cook it quickly using high pressure. Either way, it’s going to taste incredible.
- It’s easy to throw together. Simply brown some meat and add everything to your pot before pressing a few buttons and waiting. This dish is super simple and quick to prepare!
- It’s perfect comfort food. We enjoy chili most in the winter when it’s cold and snowy. Great for those family days where we spend sledding around outside. A bowl of hot chili always warms us up afterward.

How to Make Black Bean Turkey Chili
- Turn your Instant Pot to saute mode for 30 minutes (this is more than enough time needed and helps to ensure that the pot won’t turn off while cooking).
- Brown your ground turkey until it is almost completely browned. Then add in the garlic, onion, celery, and peppers.
- Cook together for 3 minutes.
- Add in the remaining ingredients, except the beans, stirring to combine.
- Place the lid onto your Instant Pot, turning off the saute mode and setting it to High Pressure for 3 minutes.
- Cook and then allow for a 5-minute Natural Pressure Release. Manually release the remaining pressure.
- Stir in the beans and let sit for 5 minutes with the lid on.
- Serve warm with your favorite toppings.

Turkey Black Bean Chili Recipe Tips
- I use two kinds of meat – ground turkey and sausage. This adds to the flavor of the chili.
- This recipe can be made in the slow cooker. Simply brown the ground turkey and vegetables in a pan before adding them, along with all the other ingredients, to the slow cooker.
- Slow cooking in an Instant Pot is not the same as a slow cooker. Instant pots only heat on the bottom whereas slow cookers heat all the way around. This varies the cooking time.
- The last step is adding the beans and giving them some time to warm up, just about 10 minutes. If you put the beans in too soon, they will get mushy and fall apart in the chili. Nobody wants chili with mushy beans!
Whether or not you think it is better in a slow cooker is purely a personal choice. The longer chili has to cook the more the flavors can meld and develop, but it tastes great when made in a hurry too. The Instant Pot helps to make the chili taste slow-cooked even at its fastest speeds.
You should always cook your meat prior to adding it to any chili recipe. This is because raw meat shouldn’t mix with the other ingredients. By cooking the beef first you can more easily separate the fats from the meat and get a better depth of flavor in your dishes without the food safety risks.
