Making your own pancake syrup is easy and not nearly as time-consuming as you might think. Just mix, simmer, and cook it down in a pot while you’re flipping flapjacks in a skillet, and by the time you’re done, both are ready to go. Sounds easy, right?
What is homemade butter maple syrup?
It’s an easy DIY maple syrup recipe that adds in the wonderful richness and flavors of butter. If you ever find yourself reaching for the butter flavored maple syrups in the store, then this syrup is sure to be an instant favorite and since it’s made with real butter, it’s a win-win.
Something to note about this maple syrup vs the real deal maple syrups from Vermont is that this syrup is simply maple flavored. We aren’t actually going to tap a tree and boil the sap for hours. Instead, we’re going to thicken a mix of sugar and water to get that great consistency without all of the work.
And it’s a good thing too because 40 gallons of sap would have made 1 gallon of syrup, which means we’d need a LOT of workspaces, patience, and effort to do it the traditional way. That’s a lot more work than I’m willing to put in first thing in the morning, how about you?
This homemade butter maple syrup takes minutes to prepare and yields enough for several pancakes (if not a few days’ worths of syrup). This means less effort, hassle, mess, and stress. Perfect for a good start to your day. Serve maple syrup butter over pancakes, waffles, yogurt, granola, and more!
Maple syrup butter ingredients
- Butter: We need butter to make butter syrup, the good news is that we only need 1 stick to get that rich flavor profile we’re looking for.
- Sugars: We will need both granulated white sugar and brown sugar to make this work.
- Milk: We want to use ½ cup of milk to get the syrup nice and creamy. You can use whole milk or plain unsweetened non-dairy milk.
- Honey: Honey helps to add sweetness, flavor, and adjust the thickness ever so slightly.
- Baking soda: With the use of some baking soda we can create a tangy flavor much like that of buttermilk, but without actually using buttermilk.
- Maple extract: This is where the maple syrup flavor comes in. We need a little extract to make our homemade syrup taste great.

Butter Syrup FAQs and Tips
If you’re looking for a dairy-free version, you can check out this homemade maple syrup recipe. But if you love the rich and delicious taste of milk and butter and want to enjoy a new kind of breakfast experience, I recommend you try this butter maple syrup. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever had before.
You don’t want to use a smaller pan for this because it will get very foamy and needs to reach a rolling boil, so keeping this size pan is best for limiting the messes on your stovetop.
Serve it hot or cold, it’s tasty either way. You can also store any unused syrup in an airtight container in your fridge. Just remember to reheat and stir before use because the butter might separate during the chill process.
A rolling boil is one that cannot be broken by stirring the pot. This takes about 5 minutes to attain but once you get there, let the mixture boil for 2 minutes.
Store in an airtight container (like a mason jar) in the fridge, reheating and stirring before use to melt and combine.
