What? Your dogs need dog gear?
Yeah. Poppy is a little bit of a princess. But it’s ok, she earns her keep! Since winter is upon us in full force, I thought I’d tell you about the jacket I use for her. She is a pretty good farm dog, but sometimes she just needs a coat, it’s cold out there! While we are at it, I’ll add in my must-haves for her when we are on the go, traveling, or hiking. It makes things SO much easier. Now that we have Maverick, he needs some gear too! But definitely not a coat.
Dog gear: Jacket
We have the Ruffwear fleece jacket and I love it. It’s snug, warm, and has a zipper. I really dislike velcro, velcro + dogs = a hot mess. Poppy weighs about 65 lbs and has a really deep chest and a medium or large dog jacket fits her fine. The large is just a big longer which isn’t a bad thing.
Dog gear: Collapsable bowls
If you are doing anything with your dogs where you will be gone all day {herding animals in a distant pasture, hiking, traveling} these collapsible dog bowls are a must. Often, there isn’t a ton of natural water sources where we are so it’s nice to have a bowl. We have a discontinued version, but these drawstring top bowls are really similar. We got the larger size and can pack enough food for both dogs for a weekend just in the bowls. I don’t know about this newer version, but our version holds water fairly well. It will start to soak through after about 24 hours so we usually fill it up during the day and then empty at night.
Dog gear: Backpack
We also love to use her dog backpack. We have a Mountainsmith dog pack, again, our version is discontinued but this version is super similar. She wears the medium and it fits her just right. This isn’t just useful when we are hiking, if we only have time to go on a short walk, loading up the backpack with a few cans of food helps drain more energy and get her in work mode more quickly. Now Maverick needs one! There is nothing better than your dogs carrying their own gear when you’re out exploring. Not going to lie, it’s also pretty dang useful around the farm if I need a few extra “hands” and the 4-wheeler is full! The dogs don’t ever mind a job.

Dog gear: Life Jacket
Now, call me crazy but I’ve considered getting a dog life jacket for Poppy. Do any of you have life jackets for your dogs? I’ve always had dogs that love to swim so I’ve never thought of it until we got her. What do you think? Would it help her feel comfortable swimming?!?! I can’t decide….
